Jawai Leopard Safari

Where Leopards Live Among People.

Granite hills. Open desert. Ancient temples. A reservoir catching the last light of day—and leopards moving quietly through it all.

Jawai sits between Udaipur and Jodhpur at the foot of the Aravalli Hills, where leopards den among granite outcrops and have coexisted openly with local Rabari herders for generations — not confined to a fenced reserve, but genuinely part of the landscape. Morning and evening safari drives, roughly 5–8am and 4:30–7:30pm, offer some of India’s most reliable leopard sightings anywhere, alongside striking rock formations found nowhere else on this itinerary.

Not a Tiger Reserve —
Something Rarer

Jawai breaks the pattern of every other stop on a wildlife itinerary: there’s no park gate, no zone permit system, no core-and-buffer division.

Leopards here live among granite kopjes and riverbeds alongside working villages, observed at a respectful distance by expert local naturalists who often know individual cats by name and territory.

Where to Stay

SUJÁN Jawai — ten ultra-luxury tented suites among granite outcrops and riverbeds, widely regarded as the benchmark for this kind of wilderness stay, with a private Royal “Panthera” suite for travellers wanting the very top tier.

Jawai Leopard Camp — a smaller, more intimate option with just 8–9 tents at the foot of the Aravallis, a genuine wildlife and farm retreat rather than a resort.

“Jawai is the one stop on this whole wildlife circuit I’d call genuinely unlike anywhere else in India. You’re not looking for a leopard hiding from you. You’re watching one that already knows the village, and has decided you’re not worth worrying about.”

WHERE TO STAY

Luxury That Belongs in the Landscape.

Jawai’s most memorable accommodation is not about enormous hotels.
It is about small, carefully designed camps that allow the landscape to remain the hero.

SUJÁN Jawai

A highly distinctive luxury tented camp designed around the granite landscape and the leopard experience.

Best for: couples, serious wildlife travellers, photographers and travellers seeking an exceptionally private interpretation of Rajasthan.

JAWAI Leopard Camp

A more intimate wilderness experience built around the region’s leopard habitat and local culture.

Best for: wildlife enthusiasts and travellers wanting a smaller-scale camp experience.

Our Approach

The most expensive camp isn’t automatically the right one.

We consider:
Leopard habitat • Safari access • Camp location • Privacy • Naturalist quality • Cultural experiences • Season • Number of nights

Because Jawai should feel like a wilderness journey with a beautiful camp, not a luxury resort with wildlife somewhere outside.

THE PEOPLE OF JAWAI

The Story Beneath
the Leopard Story

One of the reasons Jawai deserves more than a two-night wildlife stop is its human landscape.

The region is closely associated with the Rabari pastoral community, whose traditional way of life remains visible around the granite hills.

Their relationship with the landscape is not an attraction manufactured for visitors. It is everyday life.

Cattle move across
the same terrain
where leopards hunt.

Villages sit
beneath
the same hills.

Temples remain
part of the
landscape.

A carefully designed visit can introduce travellers to this world respectfully, through local hosts and experiences rather than turning culture into a performance.

A CURATED JAWAI LEOPARD JOURNEY

3 Nights / 4 Days

For a first visit, three nights allows enough time to experience Jawai beyond a single leopard drive.

Day 1 —
Into the Granite Country

Arrive into Jawai and settle into your wilderness camp. The afternoon is intentionally slow. Walk around the property, meet your naturalist and watch the granite landscape change colour as the sun begins to fall. Your first safari begins towards sunset.

Day 2 —
Reading the Rocks

An early morning leopard safari. This is when you begin to understand Jawai. The tracker isn’t simply looking for an animal. He is reading the hills. After breakfast, return to the camp for a slower afternoon.

Day 3 —
Leopard Country & Local Life

Another morning in leopard country. Then step away from the safari vehicle. Meet local communities, discover traditional pastoral life and explore the temples and landscapes that make Jawai more than a wildlife destination.

Day 4 —
One Last Look

One final morning safari. Perhaps a leopard. Perhaps a hyena. Perhaps nothing more than the first light hitting the granite. And that is exactly how wilderness should be.

BEST TIME FOR A JAWAI LEOPARD SAFARI

When Should You Visit Jawai?

Jawai can be experienced through much of the year, but the landscape changes dramatically with the seasons.

October–February

Best for: pleasant weather, comfortable safari conditions and a broader Rajasthan journey.

March–May

Best for: wildlife-focused travellers and photographers.

As temperatures rise and the landscape becomes drier, wildlife activity around water and shaded rocky areas can become particularly interesting.

June–September

The monsoon changes Jawai completely, bringing greener landscapes and a different atmosphere.

For an itinerary combining Jawai with Rajasthan’s palace cities, however, the cooler months are generally the most comfortable.

Imperial recommendation: for a first Jawai journey, we would generally favour October to March, particularly when combining the region with Jaipur, Udaipur or Jodhpur.
